A study published in Nature Ecology and Evolution reports evidence that wild African elephants may address one another with individually specific, name-like vocal labels, an ability documented in very few non-human species.
The researchers analysed 469 rumbles recorded from elephants in Kenya's Amboseli National Park and the Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserves between 1986 and 2022, with known caller and intended receiver for each vocalisation. Machine-learning models identified structure in the calls that was statistically associated with the specific individual being addressed, consistent with a name-like label. Crucially, the pattern did not appear to rely on imitation of the receiver's own call, distinguishing it from the vocal labelling seen in dolphins and parrots and aligning it more closely with the arbitrary quality of human names.
A playback experiment provided converging evidence: elephants tended to respond more strongly to calls originally addressed to them than to other calls. These results are careful and suggestive, but interpretation should stay measured. The findings are inferences from statistical association and behavioral responses, not a decoded lexicon, and they rest on a finite corpus of calls. Elevated responsiveness to a familiar-sounding call does not by itself establish that elephants deploy names with the intentional, referential structure of human language. The defensible conclusion is that the study offers promising evidence for name-like addressing that motivates further, larger investigations, while readers should be wary of anthropomorphic overreach.
