In India, people can pay for things by scanning a code with their phone. The system is called UPI, and it sends money right away, even for tiny amounts.
UPI has grown incredibly fast. A few years ago it handled a few billion payments a year. Now it handles well over a hundred billion. It is free for most people and works on simple phones, so even small shops and street sellers use it. Some reports say UPI is now the biggest real-time payment system in the world.
The huge numbers are real, but it helps to look closely. Counting payments makes the total look giant because many payments are very small. And UPI grew at the same time as other changes, so it is one reason more people use digital money, not the only reason.
