Malaria is a serious disease spread by mosquito bites. It makes many people sick, and it is especially dangerous for young children in Africa.
Scientists tested a new malaria vaccine on more than 4,800 children in four African countries. Some children got the new vaccine and some got a different one, chosen by chance so the test would be fair. The children who got the new vaccine caught malaria about 75% less often over the next year. The vaccine is made in India and can be produced cheaply, so many children can get it.
This is very good news. But the test followed children for one year, so scientists are still learning how long the protection lasts. The vaccine does not stop every case, so other tools like mosquito nets still matter.
