A new study looked at how college students actually use AI writing tools while they work on assignments. Researchers at Kennesaw State University watched 20 students write essays about perfection. The students were told to use AI however they normally would.
The findings show that students are not just copying what AI writes. Instead, they use AI more like a helper. Many students use AI to get started when facing a blank page or to come up with initial ideas. After that, they often write on their own.
Students also change what AI gives them. They edit the AI text, rewrite it in their own words, and sometimes reject it completely if it does not fit their assignment. Some students refuse to use AI suggestions when the writing feels too generic or wrong.
When students do use AI, they seem to stay in control of their main arguments and final writing. The researchers say AI is becoming a tool that students work with, not something that replaces their own thinking and writing.
