Scientists studied what happens when people eat a lot of "ultra-processed" foods. These are foods made in factories with lots of added ingredients — things like sodas, chips, frozen meals, and hot dogs.
The study looked at almost 5,000 adults in the United States. They found that people who ate the most ultra-processed food were 47% more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.
This doesn't mean eating one bag of chips will give you a heart attack. But the study suggests that eating these kinds of foods regularly may be bad for your heart over time. About 60% of what American adults eat is ultra-processed, so this affects a lot of people.
