Why Is the Ocean Salty?

The ocean is salty because rivers carry tiny bits of salt from rocks and soil into the sea. Over millions of years, all that salt has built up. A bucket of ocean water has about 35 grams of salt in it — that is about two tablespoons! Lakes and rivers are not as salty because the salt keeps washing through them and out to the ocean.
