What Are Volcanoes?

A volcano is an opening in the Earth where hot melted rock called magma pushes up from deep underground. When magma comes out of a volcano, it is called lava. There are about 1,500 active volcanoes on Earth, and about 50 to 70 erupt each year. Scientists study volcanoes to try to predict when they will erupt and keep people safe.
